CubeSats as the New Normal in Access to Space

Emrah Kalemci

Abstract

CubeSats are miniaturized but complete satellite systems with the main idea of cheap and quick access to space. They are inherently high risk systems, use of commercial off the shelf (COTS) components are possible (and even encouraged) and the success rate is not high. However, they cost much less than regular space based systems allowing universities and space agencies of developing and under-developed countries to build them and educate students and engineers.

In this talk I will try to answer what this new norm means for the future use of space technology for everybody. I will also introduce the first space detector that was developed at Sabanci University and Istanbul Technical University and show how it was launched from the International Space Station.
