UC Talks: Affective Attunements: Childhood and Gendered Emotions in Ottoman novels
Novels not only symbolize modernization but also serve as significant mediums by offering perspectives on Ottoman society, its diverse groups, and individuals within it. The talk specifically examines the various representations and conceptualizations of girlhood within the context of childhood and intertwines them with the concepts of sexuality and gender. Through the examination of different novels, this work aims to trace shifts in discourses on girlhood and gendered emotions in narratives, placing a spotlight on girls by positioning them as subjects of analysis within the historical backdrop of the late Ottoman Empire.
