Muslimness in Contemporary Literary Imaginations: Twenty-first Century Muslim Women's Writing in the Diaspora
In a political climate defined by neo-nationalist and anti-immigration narratives, where the term “Muslimness” is often synonymous with threat and terror, a crucial question arises: Who can represent and speak for Muslims? This talk proposes that diaspora studies and literary studies must converge to fully grasp the complexity of Muslim identity in the 21st century. Neriman Kuyucu Norman will discuss her recent book that explores the key ways in which contemporary Muslim diasporic texts offer alternative visions of Muslimness, forging new, multifaceted modes of belonging that defy simplification and challenge the cultural and political status quo.
