Exemption From The First Year University Courses
(ENG 101-102, MATH 101)

Students who fulfill the outlined requirements are entitled for exemption from “Freshman English I & II” (ENG 101-102) and “Calculus I” (MATH 101).  

ENG 101- 102 Freshman English

Students are entitled for exemption*

  • only from ENG 101, if they get an A-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE) and at least a B+ from the “Freshman English Exemption Exam (FEEE101****)

  • only from ENG 101, if they get an A-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE) and at least a B+ from the “Freshman English Exemption Exam (FEEE101****)

  • from both ENG 101 and ENG 102, if they get at least a C-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE) and
    • At least a 5 from from IB (International Baccalaureate) English A2
    • At least a 10 from the ABITUR, English component
    • At least a “Good” from the MATURA, English component from the Austrian High School

If the student chooses to be exempted from ENG 101, he/she is required to submit a written statement to the Foundations Development Directorate (FDD) regarding his/her acceptance of the grade (indicated by red) shown in Table 1 no later than the final workday of the first week of classes. Unless a written statement is given to the FDD within the above indicated deadline, the student is required to take the course at the first semester that it is offered in.

(*)  only for students not yet taken the ENG 101 and/or ENG 102 course

(**) All the students who are admitted to Sabanci University are required to take this exam.  Students who obtain at least a C-SL are entitled to start the undergraduate program, otherwise they go through Foundation Development Year where they improve their English skills.

(***)  For more information on AP exam:  http://apcentral.collegeboard.com.  Advanced Placement exams are given in May of every year.

(****)  FEEE101 is offered every semester during the registration week at Sabanci University.

MATH 101 Calculus I: Students, who

  • are registered to any undergraduate program at Sabancı University

  • have not yet taken MATH 101

  • get at least 85/100 from the “MATH 101 Exemption Exam”  (given at Sabanci University in the first week of every semester)

are entitled to exemption from MATH 101.

If the student chooses to be exempted from MATH 101, he/she is required to submit a written statement to the Foundations Development Directorate (FDD) regarding his/her acceptance of the grade (indicated by red)  shown in Table 2 no later than the final workday of the first week of classes. Unless a written statement is given to FDD within the above indicated deadline, the student is required to take the course at the first semester that it is offered.

Content of the Exemption Exam:

-Elementary functions (Chapter 1)
-Derivatives: definition, interpretation, computation and applications (Chapters 2, 3, 4)
-Integral: definition, interpretation and computation (Chapters 5, 6, 7)
