Exemption

EXEMPTION FROM THE FIRST YEAR UNİVERSITY COURSES

Students who fulfill the outlined requirements are entitled for exemption from "Freshman English I & II" (ENG 101-102) and "Calculus I" (MATH 101). 

ENG 101-102 Freshman English 

Students are entitled for exemption*

•only from ENG 101, if they get a C-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE) or at least a 6,5 from IELTS, or at least a 80 from  TOEFL-iBT, or at least a 550 from TOEFL-PBT, or at least a 60 from PTE Academic and at least a 3 from "English Language and Composition" part and/or "English Literature and Composition" part of the Advanced Placement (AP**) exam. 

•only from ENG 101, if they get an A-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE), or at least a 8 from IELTS, or at least a 110 from TOEFL-iBT, or at least a 637 from TOEFL-PBT, or at least a 80 from PTE Academic and at least B+ from the "Freshman English I Exemption Exam (FEEE 101***). 

•from ENG 102, if they get an A-SL from the 2nd stage of ELAE, or at least a 8 from IELTS, or at least a 110 from TOEFL-iBT, or at least a 637 from TOEFL-PBT, or at least a 80 from PTE Academic and if they are exempted from ENG 101 with "A" grade and if they get at least a B+ from the "Freshman English II Exemption Exam (FEEE 102****). 

•from both ENG 101 and ENG 102, if they get a C-SL from the 2nd stage of ELAE or at least a 6,5 from IELTS, or at least a 80 from TOEFL-iBT, or at least a 550 from TOEFL-PBT, or at least a 60 from PTE Academic and

o At least a 5 from IB (International Baccalaureate) English A, or

o At least a 10 from the ABITUR, English component, or

o At least a "Good" from the MATURA, English component from the Austrian High School or,

o At least a "C" from GCE Advanced Level English (A' Level English). 

 

 

(Note: Grades of PTE Academic, TOEFL-PBT, TOEFL-iBT and IELTS are valid for 2 year)

(*) only for students not yet taken the ENG 101 and/or ENG 102 course

(**) for more information on AP exam: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com. Advanced Placement exams are given in May of every year. 

(***) FEEE 101 is offered every semester in the first week of classes at Sabancı University.

(****) FEEE 102 is offered every semester in the first week of classes at Sabancı University. 

A reading list, and time and place for the exam for FEEE 101 and/or FEEE 102 will be announced on the University website one week prior to the exam. Students are expected to write an essay and give a presentation on these text. 

MATH 101 Calculus I
Students, who
•are registered to any undergraduate program at Sabanci University 
•have not yet taken MATH 101 
•get at least 85/100 from the “MATH 101 Exemption Exam” (*) (given at Sabanci University in the first week of every semester) are entitled to exemption from MATH 101.

(*) MATH 101 Exemption Exam is similar to a typical final exam of the course and it is in English.
Textbook 
”Calculus: Single and Multivariable”, 4th Edition, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum et al. 
Content of the Exemption Exam: 
-Elementary functions (Chapter 1) 
-Derivatives: definition, interpretation, computation and applications (Chapters 2, 3, 4)
-Integral: definition, interpretation and computation (Chapters 5, 6, 7)
Exemption Application
If the student chooses to be exempted from MATH 101, ENG 101 and/or ENG 102 he/she is required to submit a written statement to the Foundations Development Directorate (FDD) regarding his/her acceptance of the grade shown in the table no later than the final workday of the first week of classes. Unless a written statement is given to FDD within the above indicated deadline, the student is required to take the course at the first semester that it is offered. 
Original certificates are required for the exemption with IB, ABITUR, MATURA, GCE or AP.
